Healthy
Weight Loss Program:
Maintaining
Stable Blood Sugar
Stable blood sugar is THE core concept of any healthy weight loss
program. Why am I putting such emphasis on keeping your blood
sugar stable? Let’s think it through together.
Your brain controls every single cell in your body every minute of
every day. Your brain can only burn glucose. Glucose is the
technical word for blood sugar. Your brain has no way of storing
glucose. Therefore, your brain, which controls everything, is
totally dependent upon the level of gluccose in your blood at any given
instant. And what controls the level of glucose in your blood is
what you put in your mouth.
What I’m saying is that your nutritional habits - what you put or don’t
put into your mouth - are the most important behaviors that you do
every day. What you put into your mouth controls the quality of
your conscious awareness. And your conscious awareness dictates
the quality of your life.
What does this mean?
Anytime you’re hungry, you’re in a state called hypoglycemia - "hypo"
means not enough and "glycemia" means blood sugar. Hypoglycemia
is the technical word for low blood sugar. We’ve been mistakenly
taught that the answer to hunger and cravings is to eat
carbohydrates. Example. A common breakfast is a glass of
orange juice and a sweat roll. This will cause your blood sugar
to spike. As a result, your pancreas will secrete massive amounts
of insulin. Insulin is the most powerful fat storing hormone in
your body. The insulin will take all the excess blood sugar from
the orange juice and the sweet roll and turn it into fat – technically
known as triglycerides. Then insulin will take this fat and store
it in your fat cells. Not a good scenario for a healthy weight
loss program.
As a result, your blood sugar will plummet. You’re now in a state
called rebound hypoglycemia. This means you’re in an even lower
blood sugar state than before you had the orange juice and the sweet
roll. Now you’re in big trouble. To counter act this sad
state of affairs, your body releases cortisol. Cortisol is the
most powerful stress hormone in your body. Cortisol will bring
your blood sugar back up but at a terrible price. Cortisol is
catabolic meaning it will tear down your muscles and your bones.
Cortiosl facilitates fat storage, meaning cortisol will make you
fat. Now you have a double whammy going. You’ve got insulin
storing fat and now you have cortisol making your body fatter as
well. Cortisol will depress your immune system and will
accelerate the aging of your brain. Chronically elevated levels
of cortisol is considered to be the number one cause of
Alzheimer’s. The whole negative scenario came about because you
over carbed - you ate too many carbohydrates for your body disrupting
stable blood sugar levels.
It gets worse. Once your insulin level is elevated, it stays
elevated for 7 to 8 hours. Meaning, your body will be storing fat
for the next 7 to 8 hours. Insulin is a oneway street.
Elevated insulin means you can only store fat. You can’t burn any
fat. Consistently eating too many carbs for your body means
you’re storing fat 24 hours a day. It also means that your blood
sugar is low and you’re constantly craving carbs. This is your
brain’s futile effort to fix the car wreck the orange juice and sweet
roll caused.
Why does this happen? Always remember that biologically, your
body is millions of years old. Your body was never designed to
eat processed carbohydrates or even large amounts of carbs. To
eat carbs when you’re hungry is like throwing gasoline on a fire.
There’s an appropriate saying: one bite of sugar is too many and
a thousand bites are not enough. It’s ultimately impossible to
satisfy your hunger with carbs. The more you eat, the more you
want. Sugar is one of the most addictive substances known to
man. It leads to obsession, depression, lethargy, and
obesity.
Your goal is to develop the skills necessary for your success in a
healthy weight loss program. Maintaining a stable blood sugar is
your most important tool in losing weight and keeping it off for
good.
