Healthy Weight Loss Program: Drink
More Water
Water is
an important component of any healthy weight loss program. First
and foremost, your brain is over 85% water. The number one cause
of memory loss at any age is dehydration. So when you have a
senior moment . . . drink more water.
The more
water you drink, the leaner you’ll get. The more water you drink,
the more energy you’ll have. Water is your body’s best
detoxifier. Your muscles are over 70% water. The more water
you drink, the healthier your kidney’s are. Hunger and thirst are
very close. Often we eat when, in reality, we’re really
thirsty. If you want to be lean and have more energy, when in
doubt, drink water.
What
counts toward your water intake?
Distilled. Remember: the
quality of your body, of your health, of your energy is only as good as
the quality of the raw materials you put into your body. With
that in mind, the best water you can put into your body is
distilled. Distilled water is literally laboratory pure.
Distilled water is what great athletes like Lance Armstrong
drink. Distilled water is the purest, cleanest, and the
cheapest. A one gallon bottle of distilled water costs about a
dollar.
Filtered. Filtered water is
the next best with reverse osmosis being the best of the
filtered. Any filter will improve the quality of the water you
put into your body.
Bottled. Some of the bottled
waters you can buy are either distilled or reverse osmosis.
Others are bottled spring water. Trust your body. As you
start to drink more water, you will soon be able to distinguish the
best from the merely good. If you don’t like the taste of the
bottled water you’re dinking, try another brand. Keep trying
brands of bottled water until you discover one that you enjoy the taste
of.
Sparkling water. There are a
number of brands of sparkling water. Some are plain. Some
are flavored with lemon or lime. Sparkling water that is flavored
but not sweetened is a great change of pace.
Herbal teas. Pure water does
not have to be boring and tasteless. There’s a wide variety of
delicious tasting herbal teas you can flavor your pure water
with. Again, the operative word is experimentation. Keep
trying different herbal teas until you come across one or several that
you really enjoy. Mint. Apple spice. Orange
spice. Bengal spice. Tummy mint. Green tea.
Just be sure to make your herbal tea with pure water.
Decaf coffee. Decaf coffee is
another flavor you may enjoy. Like herbal tea, make your decaf
coffee with pure water.
What
doesn’t count toward your water quotient for the day?
First,
remember, anything that dehydrates your body, de-energizes your
body. And dehydraters are counterporductive to a healthy weight
loss program.
Here’s a list of things that don’t count. Why don’t they
count? Because they’re dehydrators. Just because it’s wet,
doesn’t mean it’s going to hydrate you. The following is a list
of things you want to keep out of your house, out of your body, and out
of your children’s bodies.
Alcohol. Alcohol in any form
is a major dehydrator. Alcohol is the most refined form of
sugar. Alcohol in any form is a major neurotoxin. Neuro
means brain. Toxin means poison. Alcohol in any form kills
brain cells. We age from the brain down. THE key to health
is to take exquisite care of your brain. A glass of alcohol in
any form – wine or whatever – is not good for you. The best alcohol is
zero. Am I saying you can never have another glass of wine?
No. Clearly, it’s up to you. Just be clear. Alcohol
is on the cheat list.
Fruit juice. All fruit juice,
without exception, is pure sugar. Fruit juice is a
dehydrator. Fruit juice is a major blood sugar disruptor.
There’s literally more sugar in a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice
than in an equal volume of coca cola. We’re mistakenly taught by
conventional wisdom to get up in the morning and start our day with a
big glass of pure sugar called orange juice. The best fruit juice
for you and your family is zero.
Caffeine. Caffeine is a
diuretic. Anything that contains caffeine is going to dehydrate
and therefore de-energize your body. Coffee. Tea.
Chocolate. Caffeinated sodas. Am I saying you can never
have another cup of coffee? No. But I encourage you to
limit your coffee intake to one or two small cups a day. Avoid
starting your day with nothing but coffee.
Sodas. Sodas of any kind will
dehydrate you. Sodas of any kind will make you fat.
Remember: anything that raises insulin will make you fat.
Artificial sweeteners will raise insulin. Therefore diet sodas
will make you fat. Artificial sweeteners are a major cause of
headaches. Artificial sweeteners are metabolized in your body
into formaldehyde – a major neurotoxin. Artificial sweeteners are
a major cause of memory loss and Alzheimer’s.
Sports drinks. Read the
labels. Sports drinks are pure sugar. Keep them out of your
body. Keep them out of your kids’ bodies. The best thing an
athlete can drink is pure water. Or, miracle sports water.
Miracle sports water is made from distilled water. It does not
contain sodium. And will replace your electrolytes. You can
find miracle sports water at any good health food store.
Sodium. A word about
sodium. Salt and other sodium compounds like MSG (mono sodium
glutatmate), are dehydrators. Each molecule of salt holds many
times its weight in water. This causes fluid retention.
This is the worse of all situations. You’re holding all this
water. And yet, you’re dehydrated. The water’s there.
But it’s not available to your body because it’s tied up with salt or
some other sodium compounds. Less sodium is better. You can
get all the sodium you need from clean, natural foods. Ideally,
we need 17 times more potassium than we need sodium. In the
modern American diet we get 17 times more sodium than potassium.
Tap water. Tap water is better
than no water. But there are three reasons to avoid tap
water. Chlorine. Hormones. And anti-biotics.
These are three things found in every metropolitan water system in this
country.
How
much water does your body need every day?
Here’s a simple
formula. Take your total body weight and divide it in half.
This is the minimum number of ounces of pure water your body needs
every day. Example. A 200 pound man needs a minimum of 100
ounces of water a day. There are 128 ounces in a gallon. A
200 pound man needs approximately a gallon of pure water every
day.
How
do you know if your body is getting enough water?
Your body
doesn’t lie. Your goal is urine as clear as water at least once
every 24 hours. Meaning? When you go to the bathroom,
look. If your urine is dark yellow, you have some work to do.
